Walking, running, strolling

With the Virginia Capital Trail anchoring the eastern end of downtown’s Riverfront and Belle Isle on the west, you have access to several miles of trails and pathways with the historic Canal Walk as the 1.25-mile centerpiece. Stroll the Canal Walk that was originally surveyed by George Washington; make it a romantic after-dinner walk with the skyline lights all around you or make it a stroll through history, interacting with the exhibits and art, as well as learning from the historic markers.

Walk or run anytime and anywhere along the Canal Walk, through the adjoining neighborhoods, on the Virginia Capital Trail or make a break for the wild side of downtown and head for the North Bank Trail and Buttermilk Trail or lap Belle Isle.

If you like organized races and walks, there are a number of annual events that start, end or intersect the Riverfront: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Dominion Riverrock, Anthem Richmond Marathon, Walk to Defeat ALS and more. In addition, Real Richmond Food Tours offers year-round tours of cuisine and culture in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, including walks on the Canal Walk, Virginia Capital Trail and parts of the Slave Trail.
